Our existing treatment plant has operated on our site at Craigieburn Road East, Wollert since 2009. As Melbourne continues to grow, it doesn’t have sufficient capacity to treat sewage and provide recycled water to the growing number of homes that will be built in the area, and the increased number of people who’ll be living in the area in the next 20 years.
It’s mandated by State Government that new houses in the Northern Growth Area are built with recycled water infrastructure. It’s our regulatory responsibility to provide recycled water to these properties. Using recycled water helps save precious drinking water as recycled water is used instead to flush toilets, water gardens, and wash cars and clothes.
Using recycled water is important to ensure there’s enough drinking water in Melbourne in the future. A typical residential property with recycled water uses about 25% less drinking water.
Capacity of the new recycled water facility
The bigger recycled water facility will be a 10 million litre a day recycled water facility. The capacity of our existing recycled water treatment plant is around 2.9 million litres of recycled water a day.
The new facility will be located at the same site and next to the existing treatment plant.
